Hope on the Horizon
by Harold E. Kohn
Find Hope for What Lies Ahead
In Hope on the Horizon, naturalist, artist, pastor, and counselor Harold E. Kohn turns to the natural world for 35 illustrated reflections on faith, hope, perseverance, purpose, and the challenges of everyday life. From woods and water to wildlife, weather, plants, and changing seasons, Kohn finds reminders that difficult moments are not the whole story—and that hope can change how we see what lies ahead.
Each bite-sized reflection begins with something observed in nature and opens into a larger insight about living with faith and looking forward with hope. Warm, thoughtful, and beautifully illustrated, these reflections offer encouragement for uncertain seasons and gentle perspective for the road ahead.

The Eye of a Naturalist. The Heart of a Pastor.
Harold E. Kohn had a gift for seeing meaning in things others might pass by. Birds, wildlife, plants, weather, water, woods, and the turning seasons became starting points for reflections on faith, purpose, perseverance, suffering, and hope.
That perspective grew from a lifetime of close observation. Kohn was not simply a writer who enjoyed the outdoors; his daughter described him as a true naturalist—curious, attentive, and eager to understand what he saw. At Hidden Brook, his family’s wooded retreat in northern Michigan, he found a place to slow down, observe the created world, and reflect on the deeper meaning of life.
Hope on the Horizon makes a meaningful Christian gift for nature lovers, outdoor enthusiasts, and anyone walking through uncertainty, disappointment, hardship, or change—or simply looking for thoughtful encouragement about faith, nature, and life.
About Harold E. Kohn
His life was shaped by suffering. His eye was drawn to creation. His words still offer comfort.
Harold E. Kohn was a pastor, counselor, naturalist, artist, and poet who spent a lifetime observing both the beauty of creation and the struggles people carry. A lifelong student of the natural world, he delighted in noticing the details others might overlook and sharing what they revealed about life and faith.
Kohn also knew suffering personally. Through serious illness, chronic pain, and loss, he developed a deep compassion for others that shaped decades of pastoral ministry and counseling.
His warm prose and original illustrations bring those worlds together, finding enduring lessons of faith and life in the ordinary wonders of creation.
Whatever season you are walking through, look a little farther ahead. There is still hope on the horizon.
